Alcoa's Two Plants Moves to B20 Site-wide - 11/1/04
On November 1, 2004, the Alcoa, Tennessee ALCOA (Aluminum Company of America) facility made the move to B20 in almost all their onsite diesel equipment (excluding three locomotives). This facility is made up of two plants which combined, house a total of 550 diesel vehicles and pieces of equipment, ALL of which began running B20 on November 1. The equipment is between 5 years old and brand new, and covers major diesel engine and equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar, Ford, Linde and Taylor. With roughly 300,000 gallons of diesel use annually, it is expected that on the order of 50,000 gallons per year of pure biodiesel will be consumed via the B20 venture. McNutt Oil is providing the fuel through their Maryville operations center.
The below pictures show a variety of the diesel equipment that is now running on B20.

University of Tennessee's Engineers' Day, Knoxville, TN - 10/21/04
The ETCFC joined many others to show potential, up-and-coming UT freshman what AFVs look like and discuss with them how alternative fuels, like biodiesel, are taking hold in East Tennessee.

"Biodiesel Rocks" at Volunteer Landing, Knoxville, TN - Sept., Oct. & Nov., 04
This year, the ETCFC has begun an event called "Biodiesel Rocks." We stock one or two biodiesel vehicles at Volunteer Landing during each home game, and add a small team of folks to talk to those around us about biodiesel. Dan Pursglove, Mark Downing, Bud Cooper and Jonathan Overly all helped by bringing a vehicle. Americorps volunteers have also helped by attending and passing out information and engaging walkers-by. Altogether, we've probably talked to close to 500 people, of which perhaps 50 in extended conversations. See pictures from the events by clicking here or on the picture at right.

ETCFC's Official Designation Ceremony, Headquarters of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN - 10/12/04
As of October 12, 2004, we are now a designated participant in the U.S. doe clean cities program. We succeeded by bringing together stakeholders, assessing the ability to grow alt fuels use in East TN, developing a plan for advancing alt fuels and AFVs here and then putting that plan into place. Summer Debate Team Meeting, Hiwassee College, Madisonville, TN - 8/4/04
The regional Summer Debate Team invited the ETCFC to present on America's state of energy dependence and how reform is needed now. Jonathan attended and spoke for about an hour to attentive crowd of middle and high schoolers that were very interested in learning more about how alternative fuels fit into the picture!

EarthFest, Knoxville, TN - 4/24/04
Knoxville's fifth EarthFest, the local celebration of Earth Day, was held on Saturday, April 24, 2004. Mark Downing, Barry Greenberg, Mark Penland, Linda Gass, Tim Haney and Jonathan Overly were on-hand as volunteers to let people know about alternative fuels and hybrids. We showcased seven AFVs and hybrids, talked to many people about the need for alt fuels, and made many connections to new newsletter subscribers and potential alt fuel uses.

McNutt Oil Opens ET's 1st B20 Pump, Alcoa, TN - 4/14/04
On April 14, 2004, McNutt Oil opened East Tennessee's first public B20 pump! The Mr. Gas Texaco in Alcoa at the corner of Lincoln and Wright Streets now has a 2,000 gallon B20 tank and pump. At the kick-off event, several local individuals and fleet owners filled up. One such fleet was MDM Trucking, a Maryville-based company that has about 10 dump trucks. They filled 4 trucks that day, and will look for the differences in vehicle operation as they test the fuel over the coming months.

Inaugural Run For Clean Air, Knoxville, TN - 4/10/04
The first Run for Clean Air was a grand success! Thanks to great weather (and some good outreach) a total of 224 runners came to participate and learn how alternative fuels are beginning to make a difference in East Tennessee. Alcoa, Maryville & Blount County begin B20 use - 3/12+26/04
On March 12, 2004, Calloway Oil began providing B20 to the two largest Blount county cities, Maryville and Alcoa, and to the Blount County Highway Department. Each group is fueling a couple of vehicles for a test period, to see how the fuel works for them. During another day's fill-up, WBIR's Mark Schnyder joined the crew at the fill point, at Calloway Oil's offices in Maryville, to learn about the project and tell East Tennessee!
